Top-Rated Insurance Advice You Can Trust

Don’t believe us, believe our clients.

Your Responsibility as a Car Owner in Spain

In Spain, car insurance is linked to the vehicle, not the driver. This means the registered owner is fully responsible for any incident, even if someone else is driving. Having the correct insurance isn’t optional—it’s essential for legal and financial protection.

For expats, unclear rules and language barriers can make this challenging. We ensure your policy is correct, complete, and fully understood, so there are no surprises.

  • Insurance follows the vehicle, not the driver
  • The registered owner is legally liable
  • Policies must meet Spanish legal requirements
  • Full coverage arranged clearly and correctly

How We Help?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is car insurance mandatory in Spain?

Yes. At minimum, third-party liability insurance is legally required for every car registered in Spain – even if it’s not being driven. Driving without insurance is a criminal offence and can lead to heavy fines or confiscation of the vehicle.

Can I insure a car with foreign plates in Spain?

Sometimes – but not long-term. Most insurers only cover vehicles with Spanish plates. If your car still has foreign registration, we’ll check what’s possible short-term, but you’ll likely need to re-register it (matriculate) in Spain.

Can I get insurance if the car is in someone else’s name?

In most cases: no. In Spain, the owner, policyholder, and main driver are expected to match.
If you’re driving a car that’s not in your name, we’ll help you check what’s allowed – and how to fix it if needed.

What types of car insurance are available?

We offer the three main types:

  1. Third-party only (obligatorio): covers damage you cause to others
  2. Third-party with theft/fire/glass (terceros ampliado): includes common risks
  3. Fully comprehensive (todo riesgo): covers damage to your own car too, even if it’s your fault

We’ll help you choose what actually makes sense for your car, age, and usage.

Can I keep my no-claims bonus from another country?

Sometimes. Some insurers in Spain accept foreign no-claims certificates — but it depends on the country and how it’s documented. We’ll check this for you and help you submit it if accepted.

Can I pay monthly?

Yes, most insurers offer monthly, quarterly or annual payments. Some charge small fees for instalments — we’ll show you the exact difference before you decide.

Is roadside assistance included?

It depends on the policy. Some include full roadside assistance in Spain (and sometimes even across Europe); others offer it as an add-on. If this matters to you, let us know — we’ll make sure it’s in there.

What documents do I need to get insured?

You’ll need:

  1. Vehicle registration papers (permiso de circulación)
  2. Spanish ID (NIE/TIE) or passport
  3. Driving licence
  4. Proof of address (for some insurers)

If you’re still in the process of getting your documents, we can often work with temporary solutions.

Can I add a second driver?

Yes. You can add a partner, family member or employee to your policy as long as they meet the requirements.
Be transparent — insurers can deny claims if an undeclared regular driver was behind the wheel.

Will my car be covered outside Spain?

Most policies include basic EU-wide third-party cover. Full cover abroad depends on the policy. Let us know if you drive regularly to France, The UK, Holland, Portugal or elsewhere. We’ll include this in the setup.

Can I cancel or change my policy?

Yes. Policies typically run for 12 months. To cancel, most insurers require 1 month notice before renewal.
We’ll remind you in time and help you cancel, switch, or adjust your cover.

What does it cost?

Premiums vary based on:

  1. Driver’s age and history
  2. Car type and age

  3. Coverage level (third-party vs. full)

  4. Parking location (garage/street)

As a rough guide:

  1. Third-party starts from €20–40/month
  2. Fully comprehensive starts from €60–90/month

You’ll of course always receive a clear quote with the exact number.
